Winner of 2007 BBC History Magazine History Teacher of the Year Announced
The 2007 winner of BBC History Magazine’s History Teacher of the Year is Daniel Burton from The Cooper School in Bicester. The award was presented at the Historical Association’s Secondary History Teachers Conference in Liverpool on 17 March by Greg Neale, Founder Editor of BBC History Magazine.
Below we have also listed those teachers that were highly commended and those that were shortlisted. Over 500 children nominated over 100 teachers from all over Britain and we have included some of the pupils’ nominations. You can read more about Daniel Burton and the highly commended teachers in the April edition of BBC History Magazine on sale, Tuesday 27 March. If you wish to receive an email alert when we launch 2008’s History Teacher of the Year award, please email sarahwilliams@bbcmagazinesbristol.com and write ‘2008 History Teacher award’ in the subject heading.
All the teachers that were nominated had clearly inspired their pupils to look at history differently and in a more positive light. Pupils talked about teachers making history more relevant and ‘bringing it to life’ but more than anything, they appreciated teachers making it fun whilst helping them achieve better grades. We would like to thank Voyages of Discovery for providing the winner with the fantastic prize of a cruise for two to St Petersburg and we would like to thank Steljes for providing the winning school with a SMARTBoard 600i interactive whiteboard system.
Winner: Daniel Burton, The Cooper School, Bicester “At the beginning of every history lesson, Mr Burton rolls up his sleeves as if to dive right into the vortex of history and take us back to the period we are studying! His use of rhetorical questions gets us thinking and assists us to unravel the mysteries of history!”
Highly Commended: Mark Marande, Priory Sports College, Portsmouth “He finds fun activities for us to do so that we remember the facts and knowledge learnt in lessons. He uses pictures and images related to work and this enables us to remember lessons.”
Highly Commended: Cathy Purcell, St Edward’s College, Liverpool “Miss Purcell makes history a fun, interactive and rewarding lesson… her humorous attitude allows people to be interested and not bored. She is friendly, helpful and is always on hand to give advice.”
Highly Commended: Terri Bryson, King George V School, South Shields “Our research into WW2 couldn’t be better as Mrs Bryson went that extra mile to ensure we fully understood our topic. Her ideas ranged from bringing in rations for the Home Front to working on role plays to further our understanding of Appeasement”
Shortlisted teachers: Scott Allsop, Kings College Guildford, Guildford “His upbeat and exciting lessons opened up the world of history and inspired me to look at the world around me and really know how we got to this stage in social evolution.”
Rachael Crouch, Severn Vale School, Gloucester “She is the best history teacher I have met, because she teaches us so that everyone understands the work given.”
Martin Ellis, The King Alfred School, Highbridge “He is always so enthusiastic about what he teaches and does it in an interesting way.”
Robert Furlong, Thomas Telford School, Telford “His enthusiasm for history is infectious. He can make the most seemingly boring areas of history seem just as fascinating as your favourite area of study.”
Simon Gulliford, St George's Church of England Foundation School, Broadstairs “He helped each and every one of us achieve a C or above in our coursework. I found him not only an inspiration as a teacher but also a friend I could confide in.”
Catherine Haire, Wintringham School, Grimsby “Miss Haire is such an energetic teacher. She lets us do lots of creative things and has original ideas for lessons.”
Matt Hardwick, Dowdales School, Dalton-in-Furness “He has inspired me so much that I now want to become a history teacher when I leave university.”
Lynne Harrison, Testbourne Community School, Basingstoke “She has always been a popular and well-liked teacher, but when I told her of my interest in archaeology, she offered to help me take the GCSE and gave up lunchtimes and holidays to tutor me.”
Terry Jones, Cheam High School, Sutton “I’ve always enjoyed history but when Mr Jones taught me about the Nazis last year as part of my A Level History course, I felt inspired to continue my studies at university.”
Miss Lewis, Lindsey School and Community Arts College “'She explains everything in exciting language. She never has a boring lesson and organises trips. Gives 100% every lesson to help us and never misses a lesson in a whole year.”
Ian MacDonald, The Community College, Chulmleigh “He has inspired me because he makes all of my history lessons really fun. I have learnt a lot in the short time he has taught me, and he has a great sense of humour.”
Patrick Pugh, Launceston College, Launceston “With his infectious enthusiasm and love of history, it would appear he’s swallowed every history resource available.”
James South, Rosebery School, Epsom “His passion for his subject shows through and he puts a lot of effort into preparing lessons, activities, trips and outside speakers. He instills a love of history into his pupils.”
Rupert Tobin, Oldfield School, Bath “Mr Tobin knows history inside out; he knows everything about everything from syphilis to Gustav Stresemann to the origins of Catch 22.”
Paula Urwin, Our Lady's Convent School, Loughborough “Interspersed with the lectures we have lots of class discussions and my favourite activity in history is the role plays.”
Chris Whiting, Ousedale School, Newport Pagnell “He offers students of all levels such great respect, and always guides us to achieve our personal best and reach the A* moon!!”
