The memorial is a Grade II listed monument in All Saints churchyard and is one of the longest known inscriptions in the UK. The text has been carved on all four faces of the monument. In total, it covers 57 individuals, 48 of whom are named, though only three individuals are thought to be buried underneath.

The tombstone is dedicated to the Beaver family, which was involved in the Civil War, which was fought intensely in the area. The Beavers backed the wrong side and lost their fortune. The head of the family was reduced to working as a gardener.

According to Brian Wilcock, of Berkshire Family History Society, the tombstone was erected in the early 1760s, several generations after the Civil War, when it appears the family fortunes had recovered. “One assumes that pride comes into this, and that they were looking to make a point,” he said. The Berkshire Family History Society (www.berksfhs.org.uk) has further details of the inscription, together with a family tree compiled from the information on the tombstone.
